Brand management platform for National Grid

As the future of energy becomes increasingly important so does National Grid's essential role connecting people to the sources of that energy.

As an engineering-led business, National Grid operated for much of its existence without feeling the need to talk too much about its brand. But changing markets and, in particular the public satisfaction measurement used by Ofgem, means that many people inside and outside the company are now creating all sorts of communications collateral for many diverse audiences.

  • Software development
  • Website design and build

The Workstation manages workflow with a simple approval system which ensures that the marketing team produces material "on brand" and with the correct tone of voice.

The head of brand approached us to come up with a way of making sure all this material is produced in the right way - so it looks the way it's supposed to and speaks in a tone of voice reflecting the company's personality.

We designed and developed a secure online brand hub to educate people about the evolving National Grid brand and offering access to artwork, photographs and films.  We also created an approvals system where concepts can be uploaded for review by the central brand team.

Since its launch in September 2010, every single item of internal and external communications goes through the workflow system and is approved (or not) by the central brand management team. The .NET and Umbraco platform is extremely flexible and it has been enhanced and updated a number of times in that period as the company's brand management processes evolve to match their communication needs.
